Building your own home - it's not a dream!
Here we are with the latest update on the building of 14 homes for ex-Armed Forces personnel, if you recall from the last update there are 10 one bed flats and four two bed flats. Fisher & Dean the contractors have been on-site and are moving the build along at a nice steady pace; block 'A', which consists of four one bed flats at the front of the plot is almost finished inside, all of the doors have been fitted, and the kitchens and bathrooms are complete. The flooring has to be done as well as any snags there might be, entry phones will be installed for security.
The large block 'B', at the back of the plot has been finished on the outside, a nice new fence has been put around the back, with a patio to the side - all looks great. If you remember there are six one bed flats to the front making it three-storey and at the rear there are four two bed flats and that is two-storey. The rear is also fitted with solar panels which will light the stairwells I believe.
Most of the electrics work has been done; bathrooms and wet rooms are almost complete and kitchens are being fitted. I must say that the quality of all fittings making up the end result are superb and really very nice. For the last couple of months the ground-workers have been in digging holes for this and that, fitting kerbs, completing car parking spaces, preparing for the utilities such as Gas, Electric and Water etc which are being done this week. Although not set in stone, it looks like the contractors will be gone in approximately eight weeks, and about four weeks hopefully after that we could be moving in.........Wow!!!.
The CSBA (Community Self Build Agency) are starting other projects around the country, Plymouth isn’t far away from finishing, Wrexham & Hereford may be starting soon and other projects are in the pipeline. If any ex-service person out there thinks there is nothing left for them, nothing to hope for then please ring the CSBA and see if there is a project planned for your area. There is no age limit or time served requirement, you will be able to learn a trade if you wish and go to college. There is nothing that can't be achieved with plenty of effort from you.
This project has opened my eyes, it has been a wonderful experience, and one I will not forget. You also get to meet your neighbours before you move in.
Please... if you get a chance to become a Self-Builder like me for a year or so and as long as you are prepared to put in some effort then do it and Good Luck!!!.
