You are being very unfair to the many Afghans who lost their lives fighting the Taliban. I guess there is many an Afghan fighter with war wounds who is desperate to hide his disability from the Taliban. Try too to understand the fear of his wife and chidren. What would you do if you were in his position now.

Those who assisted our troops in the ground deserve an opportunity to improve their lives in a place free from threat & tyranny.

Well Peter, I think you're being a bit simplistic there. One thing we should have realised and perhaps a few politicians finally did so, was that Afghanistan was and remains, an incredibly poor and backward country. Aspects of life we take for granted, barely acknowledged, if at all. The vast majority of the population live at or below a grinding poverty level. Education (not available anyway, for women & girls) such as it is, with emphasis more on religious indoctrination than what we would regard as 'knowledge'. Small wonder then, that numbers of Afghan civilians seized the opportunity to work for the westerners after the Americans arrived following 9/11. 'We' gave them hope and in so doing assumed responsibility for their future safety. whether we thought so at the time, or not. In the life-cycle of a nation, twenty years is a mere spot in the bucket! Anyone working for the allies put their lives on the line and irrespective of what other countries do, or don't do, us Brits have to get stuck in and help...simply because we're British! The fact that our top civil servant of the department (supposedly) in charge went on holiday, merely repeats the old story of 'Lions led by Donkeys' and makes no difference. We have to get those folk who worked for us and their families, out of Taliban reach, or hang our heads (yet again, in shame.
