Do some I suppose of the Senior members remember the putting on the "Puttees" Give me your views? My name is Duncan Ex RAF Regiment served 22 yrs: I remember getting extensions on the Old DMS boot? Was a real joy to get the New High boots? But must say the "Puttees" did look smart, putting them on the correct way was confusing at the start? What do you think?

We wore puttees with KD shorts back in the fifties. Only purpose being to keep sand from the gap between socks and boots. First thing I did was to shorten the length by 50%. Bit cooler and just as effective. Must have been a nightmare to get the things on properly in the old days. Cheers, Syd.

I was presented with Puttees when I was attached to No1 LAA Sqn RAF Regiment in 1970. The Rock Apes kindly showed me how to apply said accesory. I still have them and now use them when I'm out hunting in the warmer weather to stop the tics and other pesky insects from crawling up my trousers.

I think you were talking 'Anklets, Webbing' if you were 'blancoing', not Puttees, they were made of wool. Anom

I remember the ridiculous items of 'clothing', from being told to wear the webbing when I reported for my first ever inspection down at Maidenhead with the Intelligence 'Pansies'. The inspecting officer took one look and almost freaked out at my appearance. Glancing around to compare what the others were doing (they'd been there two weeks already, and so were up to date with how to dress properly), I noticed that they had all used rubber bands to make their trousers look smarter. (And yes, I also recall blancoing the damn things later up at Catterick for my basic training.)
