“ tanganyika rifles mutiny 1964 ”
I was serving on HMS Victorious at the time and remember the ship anchoring off Dar es Salaam in order to land the Royal Marines when the Tanganyka Rifles mutiny
had taken place. We were there for a number of weeks and apart from organising the occasional banyan, on one of the small islands close by, there
was not a lot we could do apart from wait for the return of the RMs.
If I remember rightly the only ammunition the marines had was what they were carrying as the marine support on board forgot to land the backup
supply of ammunition!!! Luckily, the mutineers lay down their weapons when they sighted the landing of the Royal Marines.

I was a young marine with Y Coy 45 Cdo on that op we attacked Colito Barracks landing in Whirlwinds and carrying No 4 rifles and 303 ammo from the Vic armoury. The guardroom was hit with an anti-tank rocket and we raided the East African Rifles armoury for better weapons, someone took an Elephant gun ffs. I nearly threw a 36 grenade into a room occupied by baddies, it was actually nurses and youg kids in there hiding, still get the shakes when I think of it.
I was in 2nd Bn Tanganyika Rifles at Tabora. Got flown home.
