I might be an old codger but I'll bet I'm not alone when I snort in despair at seeing our armed forces try to do just that whilst on parade. It is the most untidy and un-natural drill movement in the book ( it was only employed during basic training and on 'chasings' in the Guards when I was in 60 odd years ago .Can someone in power not see how rediculous it looks and swing it back to 'waist high' with a bit of swagger ? The fit of uniforms (trousers above boots - shabby bearskins etc) don't look too good either. Nice little moan.
I too agree Mr Hogg. And when will someone tell them how to march in line in a straight line properly dressed. It often looks like a snake wiggling across the parade ground. Most noticeable are the Brigades of Guards. They used to be so precise but now look terrible. I'm sure at events such as Trooping the Colour her Majesty must have difficulty keeping a straight face.
Well Bob, I have to confess, there can be no doubt whatsoever. I am indeed an old codger! However, I don't know what the KRH do these days on parade, in the 14th/20th KH it was waist high, but Lord help you if there was a kink at the elbow. I can hear SSM (Wog) Hardwidge on parade right now. "Come on then, Bags of swank!" And you could see 'A' sqdn respond instantly.... Happy Days! We all thought it was only the RAF that swung their arms shoulder high, after all they needed the exercise, while the poor old matelots had to run everywhere! No doubt about it, the cavalry was the place to be. Cheers, Syd.
