I served in 34 Independent Field Sdn R. E. 1957 to 1959. Cyprus, Kenya, Aden, Muscat-oman, Bahrain and demobbed in Kenya, October 1959. It was classified as "Active service" in all these postings. Eoka crisis, Cyprus, member of patrol (attached as R.E. support to infantry platoon involved in attack on Eoka terrorists, 4 killed) protocol was if any servicemen were involved in fatal attacks on Island that they were immediately, 24 hrs, transferred of island (Cyprus) Shipped to Mombasa, Kenya then to Gill-Gill (All of 34 Indenp') the Mau Mau campaign was still active. Saw atrocities committed on European farmers, cattle and Kikuya staff on remote properties. The whole squadron was deployed to Aden. Tasks, clearing anti-tank mines layed by local insurgents, trained, very badly, by Russians, yes, Russians. Some mines recovered were of Russian origin. Deployed to Bahrain, relatively quite compared to last months! Returned to Gill- Gill Kenya. On guard duty at Lokitaung near Lake Turkana. Short term. Jailed Jay-ZMau members including Jono Kenyatta. Returned to Gill-Gill, near Nakura and Navashia. Demobbed October 1959. Flew out from Nairobi to Folkestone UK.
