I was a Boy Entrant at Hereford from Jan '62 until pass-out July '63 but I remember that winter as if it was yesterday! After a 1 hour bus journey from my home town of Ashington, Northumberland then a 13 hour journey by steam train from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, changing at Crew and one other station, I arrived at Hereford station where I and a few other boys were met by an RAF Regiment Cpl. Then bundled into a 3-tonner and onto Credenhill. God, that winter was cold and having to live in an old wartime Nissan hut with 2 coke stoves for a year is something you don't forget in a hurry. Not forgetting the horsehair mattress! We eventually got a foam mattress for the last 6 months of Boys service.
