Bangers and Smash.
Thought I would open this subject as I guess most of us have had / got motor cars of all makes and ages during our lifetimes. Just can't remember if Colin broached this subject in the past.
Though I drive the firms van when I was demobbed in 1957 I did not take and pass my test until 1959. Then big, big mistake. After getting Married in 1960 I was desperate for my own motor. Saved up £40 and when I saw an advert in the evening paper I went on the Saturday morning first thing to the showroom. all it said was Humber £40. no more details. I was out the garage peering through the windows although I did not know what I was looking for. when the owner turned up we walked in and as I looked around we then went through another door full of cars. Following on behind we then went outside and down among cars which were out in the open. That's when I fell in love, A cream long nosed Humber Super Snipe limousine with running boards, deep leather seats, cream steering wheel. could not part with my dosh quick enough even though they had to charge up the battery to start it.
Pure luxury but at a price, every time I put my foot down the speedometer went up and the petrol gauge went down. Could not afford it so advertised it at same price to get rid. The only one that was interested was a smartly dressed type, black jacket and striped trousers. though I really wanted cash i reluctantly accepted a Cheque and away she went Sure enough the cheque bounced marked "Represent" which I did and it was "Refer to Drawer" this when on for couple of times until I somehow found out where his office was. When I rang he snootily told me do what it says on the cheque. So I told him if I had any more trouble I would come down with a few Mates. I finally got paid but the ironic thing was out driving the Carpet firms van down this curved road and what do I see on the other side. A long car bonnet and looking underneath it a pair of striped trousers and a black jacket. I called out Having trouble there" he replied Yes, as a matter of fact I am. With great relish I answered him "Yes not as much Fu....g trouble as I had with your cheque"
Wish i that Limo now as they are used for Weddings etc.
Just what and how was your first car buy and experience etc.
Sold it very shortly afterwards.
Just one of many Bangers i had in the late 50s / early 60s.
I also bought a Rover, one of those four door job that opened from the middle. It was painted Yellow at the bottom and the rest was the original cream. My Daughter Alison (Six) always called it the "Yakky Rover" for some reason. Like all Rovers it was luxury leather seats and nice springing.
