Curiouser and Curiouser!
Seems like a long time since I used that opening but it seems to fit. Most of us have in the past commented on the way in which the world is moving these days. Many of us are convinced that the lunatics have taken over the asylum and the latest pronouncement makes me wonder if we have not, rather like Alice, now stepped through The Looking Glass. I am referring to the deliberations of the 'August Personages' who make up the staff of the Office for National Statistics who are now considering whether the next Census form, due in 2021, ought to pose the question of to which gender we belong as being compulsory or voluntary.
How in the name of sanity can the country prepare for the needs of the population if we don't know how many of each type there are? They are concerned that such a question might upset the very tiny but very vociferous minority of people who consider themselves outside the normal binary classification. Never heard of 'Binary'? Neither had I until recently. It means one is either male or female, man or woman, masculine or feminine. They are deliberating whether simply offering 'Other' as a category will not offend those who consider themselves as whatever they feel they are. I read recently that there are in the region of fifty types being put forward as 'Genders' so where would we stop. The concern is that lumping them all together will somehow make them feel upset. Aw diddums!
Germaine Greer, a noted feminist, is now being pilloried by these people who are exercising much too much sway over the rest of us for her stance which simply argues that women are as important as men. I see no fault with that. She is apparently at fault for saying that a man who has his bits chopped off is still a man. I agree with that as women who have their bits mucked about with, rearranged and have added prosthetics to boot are still women however they regard themselves.
By the way - the ONS is answerable to no one but itself as an independent body with a board of 14 academics and economists. As a last comment we who are content to call ourselves what is on our birth certificate (male or female) are now known as 'cisgender'. As long as they don't call me 'Cissy' gender I don't mind.
So my dear friends, what do you make of this latest step or lurch down the ladder of equality where every single person's whim must be satisfied and every foible catered to, where no one has to feel in any way less than anyone else? I look forward to some sparkling reponses.
Regards to all,
Their public toilet facility was marked "Pointers" and "Setters".
We have the broadening of the categories being systematically invented as we (they) go along. We now have as a community outside the normal one (please - no rocks through my front window!) whereby the old LBGT collaboration has expanded to LGBTIQ. By way of explanation the letters stand for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transient/Transitory, Intersex and Queer. What's that you cry? Why are we straights not allowed to say 'Queer' yet these people are? Rather like the 'N' word.
It is being debated whether a third option apart from Male, Female to be named 'Other' would not be insulting to those who consider themselves in one of these alternative offshoots such as 'Fluid'. This, according to one person (?) on TV is how erm, the person considers, erm? - itself. It looked like a man but declared itself to be whatever it decided to be on the day. That is, being a man sometimes or a woman sometimes or neither one or maybe a selection of self chosen genders.
So where do we go from here? Are we who know what we are in effect a dying breed? Will our descendents have to scan a couple of thousand categories before putting pen to paper in order to avoid a visit from the thought police? Think that's a silly question? ot any longer my friends, not any longer! The future soon becomes the past so beware!
The only sensible part of this imposition on GPs is that it is one from which they can simply opt out as I read the article. Can't you just see some newly qualified lady GP asking an unshaven roadbuilder or blacksmith that question? Talk about 'Yer Wot?????'
Truly the world is going progressively mad or as my mother would have put it - 'Arse about face!'
