I feel that It is about time before it is to late, the veterans who served in West Germany during the Cold War. For example 1983 should not have to pay for the Cold War Medal ?, they played a great part in defending everyone’s freedom from theUSSR.
Richard Ford
In the early 60's did many patrols during the Cod War around Iceland stopping the Icelandic gun boats - Thor and Odin from damaging out trawlers. Got quite nasty and dangerous at times - was serving on HMS Palisser. We were never recognised apart from the crews of the trawlers.

What a load of tosh. We all signed -on to do whatever we were told and got paid for it. Medals & decorations - who cares? And, as for quoting Obama, remember the Americans, God bless 'em, have always gone in for baubles. Elvis had accumulated two (2) decorations when he landed in Germany. One being for crossing the Atlantic! Are you whingers all big girls with piercings & a penchant for jewellery? Grow up!
I served for nearly 6 years in Germany from 1961-67 lots of quick train exercises, lost a good mate in a recovery accident. Very busy time. The training cost lives they died training to protect our country. We should get a thank you over and above the wage we got. Take Care All.
Mike I agree with you I joined to serve my country no mater where they sent me not for medals etc. We are British Forces not American troops who like to get medals for turning up, keeping clean, passed basic training, etc. We British troops don't need that we did not join for baubles we joined to serve if you need baubles for your service think again why did you sign up
About time this was proposed. I spent my 22 yr service in Nuclear Submarines, chasing and being chased by Soviet Subs. Risking my life below the waves gathering intel, and being in places unmentionable due to sensitivity. I also fully support this.
Served with the Harrier Force in RAFG. The NATO annual evaluations were taken very seriously. As others said training resulted in some serious accidents. About time this cold war period was recognised.
I travelled to Berlin in 1954 along the highway on a BSA single pot 500 keeping our convoy together. I was taken prisoner by the Russians for four hours because I deviated from the highway to help a stranded Jeep.
I was released after four hours by an understanding Russian officer. Not nice and I can still remember the trauma I went through at the time. A long time ago now!

It would be nice to have some appreciation, we lost blokes on exercise, continually training , we didn’t know if some of the scary moments were real , and about to go to war at times, as a tanky our life expectancy was couple of days, if it happened we would have done our best.....
Having served on a V Bomber station in the UK as a RAFP QD looking after Victor B1 aircraft in 1958, then posted to Aden and East Africa for another two years ,I would consider myself and all my colleagues to be entitled to a Cold War medal to go alongside my Arabian Peninsula medal. Hairy moments in Aden and Kenya,
Having served on 2 v bomber stations Akrotiri Cyprus and RAF COTTESMORE canbberas
i also would like all us Veterans of cold war era have some reconingtion

A cold war medal would be a medal to recognize the services of all serving members during this time. I personally served on 213 Squadron Canberra B (i) 6's at RAF Bruggen. We used to carry the US nuclear tactical weapon and many of us spent a week at a time in the QRA compound.
Medals come "if your face fits" I served in the RN 1955-1966. Involved in Cyprus and Cod wars. Told not entitled to the Naval GSM as I was in Cyprus under the age of 18 and in the RN even joining at 15 your actual "Time served" does not start until your 18th birthday (leastways it did then). 81 next week so no point bothering now, But it down to experience. Must be so many RN Army FAF amd Marines in same boat.
My service took me to many places tied into and consistant with the Cold War, from Northern Norway to the Med and Canada, with a few of shoots to more exotic locations as far south as the Falklands, however, the duties directly involving my Cold War Service were never ackowledged.
I fully back this campaign. All my service, from 1958 to 1971 was during the 'cold war'. I served in BAOR and UK as a Recy Mech and did many exercises, often near the borders with 'you know who' Many times it was touch and go where there was the possibility of an 'incident'. What recognition did we get? zilch!! Just extra cleaning and repair of equipment.
So I say, GO FOR IT!!!

I agree wholeheartedly with your campaign.
Cold War Medal - only an ersatz one from Awards Company. As far as getting an official one is concerned, forget it! Today's MoD and the Honours and Awards Committee have not the slightest interest in back dated awards, it would cost megabucks and time to research records of those who were entitled, from 1949 -1989, literally hundreds of thousands of former British military personnel, and more megabucks to strike the medal if produced by the official suppliers, Worcester Medals. The Cold War ended 31 years ago next month. Be satisfied that you were there, as I was, and you did your bit to ensure that it didn't become Hot. Maybe a cynical attitude, but true.
Lundy,
There's no chance of an official medal mate. As I said in my mail above yours, the cost, searching of the records of hundreds of thousands of British servicemen and women that served in BAOR/RAFG during the Cold War would be an astronomical undertaking. I was there the same time as you and served eight years (two tours) at RAF Guetersloh during that time and later, in the RAFVR on the East/West border. I've got my many photographs and memories of that part of my 31 year career and am happy with that. Attached - Russian control tower on the East side and the Helmstedt/Marienborn crossing, Checkpoint Alpha. Picture taken from the NAAFI car park on the West side.

Yes I agree it would be nice to be thanked and prove it with a recognition.
