Hello Everybody, Obama is about to announce a Cold War Medal in the US and there is also an E-Petition in this country entitled "We should honour the service personnel who protected the UK during the Cold War" Now like the pensions pre-75 complaints and the ongoing E-Petition and also the ongoing NDM campaign please make a vote on the E-Petitions site. Just moaning on this website is not enough "Our Apathy To Not Bother To Vote On These E-Petitions Leads To The Governments Apathy To Award, So Far As They Are Concerned We Are Not Bohered So Why Should They Be" Please go on Google pick up the links and Vote. Cheers Pony Moore Ex-RN
We should get recognition for the part we played in the Cold War Campaign. We had some very dodgy moments, when we thought the balloon would go up. We were all prepared to sacrifice our lives in the defence of our country. So I am in full agreement with the campaign for a medal.
Saw a guy, ex-11th Lancers (?) at a display recently and he had a "Cold War Warrior" sticker on his jeep. Only had one, though, but we should get some made and it would help publicise our case. We were ready if the Russkies had come over, werent we?
we had missiles set up. and i thought this might be my last day on this planet.and thought how upset my poor mum would be.
Michael Price.
i agree with all above comments,we all did our share when we were called up,or joined the forces in the 1950/60s.

Come the pollies be fair it is about time you did something over these issues
Yes we had some moments,we had more "stand toos". Than I can remember.
Brings back many memories of the border patrol in DACs, trying to figure out what the hell to do first if the ruskies decided to cross over lmao
About time we got reconised as the Americans are being, all those crash outs to our potential war positions, in all weathers, day and night, Come on British Government, please reconise what we done to try and help keep the world safe. it wasnt ALL fun you know.
I ,like many others spent as much as twenty years pushing around bombers as they were known or Polaris submarines on patrols going who knows where ,all in the name of the Cold War with little or no recognition by either the public or the pollies of the sacrifices made in the way of broken marriages etc
Totally support all above comments, ex RN, and very proud of it, 1952 t0 1961, the most wonderful blokes to serve with too. The white ensign continues to fly, with pride in front of my home.
Totally support the above comments, served 1952 to 1962, very proudly in the RN, loved it, greatest blokes to serve with, the White Ensign is permanently displayed in in front of my home.
Yes, I recall the whole squadron ground crew clearing snow, chipping ice off of the runway in freezing temperature so the the squadron A/C could if need arose scramble. Being in constant readiness was to say the least imperative. Hindsight is obviously the answer, isnt it!!! But then we are not Americans are we. "Ours was not to reason why" Nor was it other than to expect our daily pay..
I agree with above comments. Was an mt driver serving at RAF Binbrook, home of the mighty Lightning interceptor. Did my fair share of " blacktop" duties on nights, making sure the runway was clear of snow and ice, in order that the Lightnings could take off and intercept the Russian bear aircraft.
I joined in 64 as a boy soldier joined the battalion in 67 was in Aden 67 also Northern Ireland twice during the time of the cold war it would be great if our government looked after the service people who were sent by the government of the day to all sorts of conflicts the NDM and the COLD WAR medal and any other award due to service people should be given with out question after all we were all in arms way thank you Allan Tindall.
I joined up in 1970 as a boy soldier, my first posting was 260 Sig Sqn, we did the comms for 36 Hy Regt which had the Thunderbird 2 missiles. I reckon if the flap had happened, the missiles would never have got out of camp, we would be a smouldering wreck.
Visited the Brocken mountain a few years ago following a Berlin trip. Memories of seeing all of this through binoculars from the West German side in 1970 came flooding back. Do you remember having to report when you spotted a Russian diplomats car on the Western side?
I joined in 71 as junior at Rhyl then spent the next 17 years going between UK ,northern Ireland and Germany. Yes I agree we should get a medal for cold war service,as we did our bit to protect not just the UK but the west as a wholeincluding the french.
While totally support the campaign, I joined the RAF for a job and trade knowing, quite well, that I may have to give my life , protecting my self!!! but hey ho such are the decisions you make. I started off at 11 sqdn, Leuchars, and on the I think the first anniversary of the Cuban Missile crisis, them damn Ruskies, sent a shed load of Bears and Bison which our Lightnings had to intercept. Naturally the T5 didnt take part but all our Mk6s were airborne then we had to borrow spare aircraft, from, 23Sqdn, in case by the next scramble we required more aircraft. Tthe ground crew ( 4 of us) were running about like blue assed flys but it was a great way to spend Easter. the Soviet aircraft jus continued to Cuba, where they could noise up the Shermans and have a break in the sun. We of course did the same to the, specifically at Fassberg where the normally active runway pointed at East Germany, turning at the last minute making them launch their QRA aircraft , and giving their gunners palpitations Does anyone know if the Russians were given a medal? It would be good to know as that fact would make it better for our Campaign
Has any body actually put these campaigns on the number 10 petition page ?,as I cant find any reference to any of them when I went their to sign .I for one would certainly sign a petition regarding our Pensions rights as I left the fleet Air Arm in 72 after 7 years service and got nothing .I would also support the cold war, and queens jubilee medal request in view of the fact, the Ghurkhas were able to renegotiate their pension rights and ability to stay here in the UK ,so why cant we renegotiate our rights to a pension ,I wonder if their is a celebrity out their who would back us ,just like Johanna Lumley backed the Ghurkhas ,what about Ross Kent I suspect he would back the Vets who got nothing after serving queen and country country .
We should be recognised for our contributions during the cold war. I was a scopie and we would be monitoring the skies 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. There were times when we intercepted the Russians on most days of the week. In addition, I served with 25 Bloodhound Surface to Air Missile Squadron at Bruggen in Germany. At the main gate was a board with a very sobering message on it which read "The role of this station in peace in to prepare for war and dont you forget it" and from information that has been released in recent years we came close to having to do just that.
This campaign was first put on a couple of years ago by a colonel but can not remember his name, by all accounts when Clegg got into goverment he was going to push it further, but ofcourse it was put on the back burner because of the north atlantic campaign, they have now got there medal, well done to them.
I spent 9 years in the RAF and havent even had a sniff at a medal 1961--1970.
I was at Leuchars when the Russians use to appear, also the Polish fishing fleet sat at the end of the runway, I served at R.A.F Laarbruch, while the Russians were at it and I was also on 8 Sdnq AEW Shackletons at Lossiemouth where we spent a lot of the time monitoring the Russians. I think all the personnel who served durint that period should be awarded a medal, as we did our bit for the fre world.
I served on attachment to the RAF in Chain Home Stations tracking Russian movements and always ready for the outbreak of hostilities, I was an Army Assistant controller, my boss was a TA Colonel and my side kick was a TA Sgt, we used to tour all the stations to check our aspect of the job. We were keeping the homeland safe....
15 years in the mob including 2 and a half years at RAF Bruggen helping to protect the west against the Red Menace. No pension, no recognition at all.

I was posted to Rhinedarlen at the start of the Cuban crisis in 52, what stcks most in my mind was induction where they never mentioned the Russians but went to great pains to stress to us that when talking to the German nationals we had to remember that the Germans didn`t start WW2.

I was in the Royal Engineers serving in Osnabruk from 1970-73. So yes we were part of the Cold War and should be officialy recognised. I fully support this campaign.
I was in the RAF from 1958 until 1973 and served in Malayasia and Persian Gulf so I think that we deserve some recognition.
I served in Germany during the "Airlift" in 1948/49 . When I was demobbed we received no Demob-Suit to re-enter "Civvy-street; we had to send our uniforms back on penalty of paying for them if they were not returned. Such gratitude in return for two years of your life..... very touching.
apersopny service person deserves recognition as an ex marine I know that I and other mariners went on unrececognnised missions on vessels that did not exist
I AGREE THERE SHOULD BE MEDAL STRUCK . I WHAS. THERE 1952 TO 1957 AND RECEIVED RADIATION PROBLEMS SAC 4096800 JOHN DAVIES RAF.
