Equality in veterans pensions
Forum thread for campaign Equality in veterans pensions
“ <br>Veterans who left service before April 1975 get no pension ”
Veterans of the UK Armed Forces serving on regular engagements who left the service prior to April 1975 having completed less than 22 years for Other ranks or 16 years for Commissioned Officers made indirect contributions towards pension but receive no benefit in return. Those who served for a minimum of 2 years beyond April 1975 are entitled to a preserved pension pro-rata their service on reaching the age of 60,on the same terms as the pre-April 1975 leavers. This is an outrageous injustice which Governments over the past 30 years have chosen to ignore.
25th September in Brighton we are hopeful of a good turn out on the occasion of the LibDem Autumn Conference
12 years service, contributing to a Royal Engineers pension every week, maybe one day perhaps we shall have justice.
Perhaps, perhaps.
Perhaps, perhaps.
If a private company had taken pension contributions from individuals in the way that successive governments have from the Forces (by abatement) then not given a pension. It is very likely that criminal proceedings would have been taken against them. Unfortunately all democracies become dictatorships after the elections are completed. Many of the representatives (MPs, comment taken from historical fact) seem to be more interested in how much they can take out of the system for themselves (wheres my chauffeur driven car) rather than what they can for the people they represent. Case in point see the comment by Sid West, 300,000 signatures and still no comment from the government. Its a disgrace.
On Tuesday 25th Sept there is a gathering to support this campaign in Steine Gardens at the War Memorial in Brighton Sussex. It is hoped the Politicians in the City for their Annual Conference will take note and give us their further support. have a look on EfVA website and become involved. Newspapers both local and National need to be informed of this injustice. Likewise write to your local MP and do not take NO for an answer.
The arbitrary nature of the 1975 eligibility date leaves an unpleasant taste. There can be no acceptable reason for depriving veterans of a pension for their years of pre-75 service. Just politicians playing politics while filling in their expenses claims. Difficult not to be cynical.
Well done for initiating this campaign Michael, high time that we were recognised in these days of ( alleged ) equality.
At present I do not and have not claimed any benefits from this country, but having served six years under colours and 16 the balance in reserve after finding out I paid towards a pension and not received it when I could do with it gutted.
To encounter ex-service people younger than ourselves, and with fewer years of service than ourselves - who nonetheless draw a pension - while we do not is outrageous. And not to address this issue is little short of evil!
Heartily agree with comments above. Our government appear to have little desire to rectify this unfair situation. It is only when awareness is raised to national level that they will be prompted into action. Good luck to the campaign. Regards Graham Ball
Fully support this campaign, we contributed so we should benefit.
Brian Earl. I totally agree with all he above coments having served with Airborne Forces for six years 59/65 we had a lot of hot spots to deal with losing good friends to enemy action I wonder if their dependants got any sort of pension?
We need to set up an E petition on the government web site get the required 500000 signatures and then they have to debated in parliament!!!

Many of us are retired - its an outrage we cannot benefit from 7 years service
Yes it is a sad day when anyone who served in HM Forces is done out of any benefits in any shape or form. I am due to go on to state pension next year and this will be my only form of income, all of the companies I worked for since leaving the Army in 1973 more or less all folded and any monies paid in were lost, Im sure a lot of ex service guys are just like me so any fight to get guys like me any extra benefit are welcome.
Wasnt it allways so. The treatment of ex servicemen has always been shocking .though the modern seviceman gets a fairer deal I served from november 57 till june 67 and only got 4 weeks pay for my trouble it would not cost afortune topay us apension as we are all in our 70s now
If we are " entitled "to a Preserved Pension what stops us from receiving the same. If prevented from the receipt of theses monies then those who are hindering are acting Ultra Vires. If this is the case why have former actions failed at law??

I was still RN Special Class reserve when the entitlement changed, and the suits that suck us dry, still say Im not entitled to a pension. They say we didnt pay contributions. How then if we become a Civil Servant, our service years would have counted toward a Pension?
I served in the Navy from 1959-1968 on inquiring about a pension i was told because i enlisted before 1966 i was not entitled to one typical of the M.O.D a bunch of bowler hatted pinstriped trousered no hopers
hi@all,

Dont understand the problem, I signed on as a Boy Entrant in the RAF knowing full well there was no pension after 12yrs. Pensions only started at the 22 yr point, so you would have to sign on for 22 to qualify for a pension.
People I feel sorry for are those today getting the chop just months or even weeks before qualifying for a pension.
The Govt. should stand trial for that offence, betraying their troops who signed on for a pension in good faith!

I know a guy who did 15 yearsin the army and left ealy 1975 and did not get a pension, I know of other guys who did 5 year left after 1975 and got pensions not right.
Eddie Colman i did 6 years in the army 1960/66 and 6 years with the colours what is this thing called a pension
John [Sandy] Sandes served 10 2/3rd years in the RAF Police, serving in The UK, Germany, Libya and Cyprus, before being Medically Discharged in 1968. For my service I received, on discharge, the 12 year Bounty, the paltrey sum of £200, scaled down pro rata to length of time served. As Danny Edwards said, "Wheres Our Pension"??? I am not holding my breath for the pension we should receive.
Don Harries. Joined the RAF 1962 - 70. Served in Benson TCEU), Aden ( JPS)and Wittering (BCAS)
No Pension is an absolute disgrace. Who put the cut off point at 1975?

I served 9 years (55-64) Germany and Hong Kong. Now a 75 year old OAP and working part time to make ends meet.Even if we got back what we paid in might help but the way we are treated is nothing short of criminal. What can we do?
