South Arabian Medal (ADEN)
Forum thread for campaign South Arabian Medal (ADEN)
“ Why didn’t crew of HMS Albion receive the above decoration ”
We first reached Aden early October 1967, and left as the last ship the night of the 30th November with 42 CDO RM and an array of other units including RAF Nurses, In that time we were part of Task Force 317 and then 318 for the withdrawal I cant see how we failed to fulfill the 30 day criteria where you had to be in Aden itself or the Gulf of Aden to qualify. Help Please
I too was on the ALBION during this period.
As an ex-vet of THE FEARLESS, who did two stints in ADEN and the GULF of ADEN inthe lead up to and during the withdrawl ,we are entitled to these service medals and demand them
My father served aboard HMS Albion I am just in the process of trying to find out what other medals he is entitiled to. My dad passed away in 2000. He has his LSGC and GSM with Borneo clasp any help appreciated my email is billyconisbee@gmail.com
We were informed that we were 'To young' to have serve there but, for those who served on the 'Grey Ghost' during 1967/68, know we initially went NI, from there we went South to Gib, arriving in darkness, resupplied during the night, that was fun! sailed before first light turning right, sorry Starboard, into the Atlantic before heading South again? that was 3 conflicts before the age of 18! Oh! Then in 1968 we had yet another trip, not the visit to Japan, oh no, lets go back to the Gulf of Aden again, thankfully we had nothing better to do. Then sent back to RAF Gan to hold, that's when that Sea Vixen over shot the runway, Carbfats laughing like idiots, until both the cockpit & observers hatch opened & out came TWO Crabfats i.e. Pilot & Observer, cannot recall what carrier they came off! I was a Fire Suitman during those months. Ray Spencer
