Christmas Island Nuclier Bomb Tests
Forum thread for campaign Christmas Island Nuclier Bomb Tests
“ Risk to forcess stationed at Chrismas island ”
several members of the armed forces were stationed at christmas island in the 1950s during atom bomb and Hyrogen bomb tests. These were subjeccted to unnown risks and may have resulted in cancer.
The campaign to get compensation failed and although I had nothing to do with the compensation claim I do feel all forces attending christmas island should have received a campaign medal in reeconition of there services.

Supporting this, not for myself, but in memory of my husband J/T Jeffery, R.A.F. who participated in Operation Grapple and died in 1985 at the age of 46
My father Sgt. Herbert May RAF Regiment was in Christmas
Island for the Grapple tests I belive in 1958. As far as I know he never suffered as a result of being there although I knew he had something to do with radioactive sanples. I wonder did anyone know him.

My father John Petch was in Christmas Island during 1958 he was in the RAF and went into the hole that the bomb made. He very recently died from a rare bladder cancer, we suspect we have Christmas island to thank for that but can never prove it.
Hi, I am the daughter of Alan Todd, who served on Christmas Island but I have yet to detail the dates. I am just wondering if any siblings of RAF men who saw the bomb testing, and were told to cover their eyes, have suffered any ill health or fertility problems. I am 46 this year. I have a sister who is 8 years younger. We have both had health problems, but the main one has been infertility. My dad was told that problems may not come out in his lifetime, but may well be apparent in his children. My darling dad died 4 years ago from lung cancer at the age of 71. Up until then, he was very healthy, was not taking any prescription drugs and was basically in good condition. My family have often wondered if we, his 2 daughters’ problems could have anything to do with his serving on Christmas Island. I would appreciate anyone’s comments. Thanks. L Rowe
i am the daughter of Fredrick J Filby who was on christmas island in 1956 - 1957 he has been suffering from psoriasis since about that date and now has several different cancers.i have had psoriasis since i was 20 , i was born in 1960,one of my daughters has a curved spine and had eating problems as a baby, my other daughter has just had her second baby 5 months ago and she was born with stomach problem and is now being transfered to great ormand st hospital.could our health problems be a result of the testing my father was part of.
I do agree But Also add Woomera like Maralinga both in the Emu Desert where tests were carried out, I was there 1958/60
My Father John Kendall was a ships officer in the 1950s having returned to the Merchant service from the R.N. after the War. He told of looking at the tests with other members of the crew from deck. Dad died of leukaemia in 1983. Like John Petchs family we suspect that his death and these Tests were related.
Denis taff Griffiths LAC. RAF. I witnessed the test at Maralinga that was dropped from a Victor bomber. Also worked with the scientist recording the half life of various radio active samples.Have suffered several types of skin cancer.visit the hospital on a regular basis.still here at the age of 78.
i dropped the first bomb. i ruined christmas island. yours sincerely - skip.
The best of luck in your campaign, I lost Squad Members in The Royal Marines at Christmas Island.
I am the Grand-Daughter of Basil Plummer who worked on Christmas Island, i am very interested in the atomic bomb testing that happened although i do not know much about what happened because my Grand-Father passed away several years ago. I am very pleased about your campaign and wish you luck. would you mind telling me about what happened? Thank You!
My father William Nicholls was also on Christmas Island in 1958, I also feel that all these serving on Christmas Island at this time deserve a medal. Good luck.
my grandad michael john sargeant served on christmas island he flew out on january 1957 with 1325 flight taking 3 dakotas to the island, im curious to see if there is anyone left from 1325 flight my grandad is now 77

My father ALEC LAWRENCE RE was on the montebello island tests early 1950s .He died with parkinsons disease far too early
4185671 SAC Coop V. Thats me Served on the Island from July 58 to July 59. That was the Grapple Bird Op. like others I was exposed to what ever those bombs chucked out. Ive had stomach cancer and Im still kicking hell out of life. It seems that those who say,we must be obey !!, do not belieave we should be reconised at the worse as humanoid or at best highly qualified victims. I very much doubt any british serviceman who served on the island will be reconized in anyway shape or form.
Noted letter from Lee Rowe - I never experienced any problems - however I had 2 sons who both needed IVF treatment - one was told that it may have been the result of Christmas Island??
John, My husband George Marner, served on Christmas Island in 1958/59. Our son and his wife also needed IVF treatment.
Good luck to anyone trying for compensation etc. I have posted somewhere before on this subject. In the mid 1950s the R.A.F. were offering all sorts of incentives to get personnel to volunteer for Christmas Island ready for the forthcoming Tests.
On our Squadron we a Flt. Lt. who hated me and put my name down on the list, when I scrubbed it out, he then put it back up again. As I had less than 12 month to do I was ineligible unless I signed on and he could not make me do that.
I have kept in touch with quite a few who did go and sadly there are virtually none still alive.
The stories I was told of the test being carried out with members of the three forces hardly being given protection was quite disturbing at the time and it seems the cancer etc. problems seem to have been passed on their descendants .

George, my husband, didn't volunteer, in fact a short time before he was due to go, he was visiting friends in Yorkshire when his appendix burst and he spent six weeks in hospital there suffering from peritonitis. It was a year posting to Christmas Island for the RAF, so they sent him the next year! He has never been interested in compensation, all he will say is "I glow in the dark". I had never thought about IVF treatment until I read someone else's sons had problems.
