Please Gentlemen, Those of us of a nervous disposition and delicate sensibilities - like myself - are liable to have a fit of the vapours if this kind of post continues. TC.
I feel that I cannot allow another moment to pass without addressing the fact that I have caused upset by allowing the standard of my submissions to fall below that expected by the more sensitive members of our group. It would be churlish of me to mention that we have among us one, who enjoyed a military career which involved doing odd things with horses.
Quoting: John Richards I feel that I cannot allow another moment to pass without addressing the fact that I have caused upset by allowing the standard of my submissions to fall below that expected by the more sensitive members of our group. Its not generally known that normally people have a reach several inches less than their height. Reach is measured when standing, or sitting I suppose, with both arms outstretched to the sides and the distance from finger tip to finger tip is taken. In my case my reach is several inches more than my height and since I am shrinking this discrepancy is growing over the years. I once worked with a man who stood six feet two and a half inches against my five foot seven. He came into my office one day and said that he had heard that I had boxed in my younger days. He then boasted that had we fought when we were in our youth he would have murdered me! He claimed that it was because of his reach and that he could have held me at bay all day. Then he tried to show me why that was so. He asked me to stand and take up guard then moved forward in a fighting stance until his fist was touching my nose. He was devastated when I leisurely scratched the back of his neck without stretching up to do it. Okay, okay, I know!!! Maybe thats why I was so damn good at gymnastics and no one, but no one, ever beat me up a rope. TC. Walks away with knuckles dragging along the floor whistling Whoop de doo - I wanna be like yoo-oo!
Not so John. The average wingspan is definitely several inches less than ones height. As one who has always taken an interest in the vital statistics as published about boxers in various magazines before they fight I have noted that the taller the man the greater this discrepancy. There have been many heavyweights at over six feet tall who have had shorter reaches than I. This includes lots of world champions. As an example Rocky Marciano who was a small man by heavyweight standards stood five feet ten and a half inches or seventy two and a half inches but had a reach of sixty seven. That reach was shared by others who were over six feet. It is not normal for reach to exceed height so Scouse and I are rare examples and at last he and I have something in common and about which we cannot argue. TC. Quoting: Pamela Forbes Terry, I have a surprise for you! Say "Hello!" to your old friend and the reason you went up that rope so quickly........ Pamela, How on earth did you trace my old girl friend? She was really fond of bananas and thats how I got the practice at climbing. TC
Quoting: john daly [ Terry, My info, as i said earlier was that this was the norm, your height equalling your arms outstreched from finger tips. Like you quote there are exceptions to the rule but I had a squint on line, Wikipedia and a whole page say that is the case usually. The India Rubber man and Quasimodo are notable exceptions plus Long John Silver and Abu Hanza have never dared try it. [/I] I wont labour this point John. Its just that in my experience having read the statistics for literally hundreds of boxers I noticed that mostly their reach was less than their height regardless of how tall they were. I wouldnt trust Wikipedia to give the right info on any subject. TC.
