Well young Terrance, that is because you is a Grumpy Old Man! We had manners because when we didn't, we received a quick belt round the lug'ole. We had respect because if we didn't, the adults would close ranks and gang up on us. Even our parents might threaten us with the School Board Inspector, The Park Keeper, or possibly, even the LAW! We were literally terrified by the mere thought, never mind sight, of a policeman in the neighbourhood! This was because, at best, we were cheeky little urchins who (at this time of year) would run along the pavements, one after the other, banging each door as we went, usually a door opened by the fourth knock, a hand would emerge in time to clout the nearest boy and the door would shut.
Every boy would have a 'Fire can'! These lethal playthings comprised a tin. 'Golden syrup' a good size. Holes would be knocked in the sides and bottom, a loop of steel or copper wire would be fixed to opposite sides of the top so that it could be swung around one's head and a FIRE built in the can! Kindling and coal nicked from your Mum's coal'us and you were invincible! How did we survive? In the dusk, tired out, we'd find a quite corner, put the cans together, and roast anything we could beg, scrounge, or nick and sit around like a bunch of little old nightwatchmen! As a variation and only after dark, we might sneak round to a back garden at one end of a street, climb over the fence into the next garden, on over the next and so on, until we reached the far end of the street. The object being to get from one end to the other without being caught...sometimes we did and sometimes we didn't! Oh, happy days! Cheers, Syd.

Okay Syd - I'll hold my hand up - Grumpy Old Man. I've even got a T-shirt with that motto on it which I wore when I was in dock because hospital pyjamas are terrible. It caused quite a bit of amusement among the nurses and a raised eyebrow or two among the doctors.
By the way - your bat is nowhere near being straight - I'll bet you were out first ball!

I was wondering as are so called living where the "Free Press" here in the U.K. that the riots that have been going on in France for some time and from tomorr0w there is to be a General Strike throughout the country. No fuel, petrol or diesel will be available. But not a word on our radio or tv.
Amazing..... this morning Sky tv. news gave a quick 30 second mention of this strike.

JD, I have tried a couple of highly recommended wines from Aldi over Christmas. I can't remember the specifics of the Merlot (also my favourite red) but it was £5-99p and very nice. The white was one of the nicest whites I have tasted. It was Organic Pinot Grigio della Venezia DOC also priced at £5-99p
I've just passed my Medical Examination and am fit to post on F.R.
Great to see my great friends John Daly and Pamela Forbes are still going strong.
I must now think hard of something to say.

Dear JR how wonderful to see you again and to hear that you are well. Lots of changes happening here in Happy Valley. I will PM you and bring you up to date. xxx
Why so many members input no details in there profiles and why so many members do not support any campaigns ? makes me wonder just saying
Steven - many members wonder the same thing about personal details. Are these people actually ex-forces? The site was never set up for campaigning and older membrs like me enjoyed it as a social site when it had a vastly different layout as this one. I am not carrying on once my present contributions run out - it is not the site I joined so it will be goodbye.
So JR - where the heck have you been hiding? Not been in Dallas by any chance? I've not been very active either but I have very good reasons for my absence.
Pamela - I'm still wondering when you'll be making your move but as soon as you are settled we'll have to arrange for me to visit. X
Hi Kim,
hope all is well with you. I think I may have a bit more time soon so keep an eye open. X

HI Kim,
I do remember very clearly doing my best to help you during those dark days but can only wish I'd been able to help you even more. As to leaving I have until October before my subs run out so who knows what I'll feel like by then. I'll be in touch soon!

Hi Pamela,
It seems things are finally moving in the right direction for you. It might be better to wait anyway because we never know what the weather will be like. I shall have to get my Sat Nav dusted off - it seems ages since I put in a new address and I shall have to do the same with my dash cam. There are more and more idiots driving like they do and I have decided I shall start putting incidents on a DVD and dropping it into the Police for them to decide what to do. My pet hate is that we often have to turn right from the main road into a street which leads directly to ours. So many drivers choose to gamble that they can get through when the lights are at Amber that byt the time you know for certain there is traffic already crossing in fron of us so we have to sit and squirm until the next change. Really gets me down but all I can do is to drive as I have always done.
Anyway, enough of that - keep well and I'll soon be ringing your door bell. X

I've been wondering why the previous entry in this thread is 31st. January, 2020. I'm sure there've been entries since then! Cheers, Syd.
ps: photo shows the moat around the Bishop's palace at Wells, when the weather was a bit warmer than right now!

No Syd - unfortunately there hasn't been an answer or anything since that date. Makes me wonder how the thread keeps its position when it hardly ever gets anything posted on it.
Hi JD. Pleased to hear from you and do hope things are improving? Not good though, that we're all supposed to be tied to the front gate! As you know, we're out in the sticks, but it does mean that I only have to walk two-three hundred yards and I can be clear of the village and off tarmac. Glorious day today, so managed a couple of miles. What with weather and raging coughs and colds, first time out in last two months. Can't claim that I found the exmoor ponies this morning though! Cheers, Syd.
Hi Syd,
Is your cough one of those that keeps coming, creating hell for a few days then seeming to go but just having a rest for a few days and then surfacing again? If so join the club - I've had one like that for almost six months, my daughter's the same and we both know loads of other people who are affected in just the same way. It's only this last few weeks when it seems to be abating a little that I've begun to feel better but damned if that bloody virus hasn't come along. It's okay Boris saying stay in for twelve weeks but we can't go without food for that length of time and not everyone has people that they can call on to bring it for them. I've seen lots of conspiracy theories on the net and I wouldn't be at all surprised if one of them is true.
Anyway it's nice to see this thread opening again. Cheers lads and lasses and Uncle Tom Cobley and all who pop on - maybe we'll stir a few up!

Well Terry. Can't say that this pesky cough is even the same one we had about two weeks after the 90th 'do', but it started as a tickle and ended as a rip-roarer about ten days later. A niece arrived from Adelaide early in March and a couple of days later developed a real streaming cough & cold, so we nursed an invalid for the week she was with us. Naturally we very smartly received the benefit of sharing a house with a cough and only now are we recovering...I think! Not to worry though, this last few days it really looked as though spring sprang, pity the weather forecast says its all going pear shaped by the weekend. Guess we're luckier than you though, in that folk practically queue at the door to offer help!
Hi JD. Whats with this zimmer then? What the heck have you been doing to yourself? Here's a snap on the Quantock Hills (before lockdown.) The white puff of smoke in the centre is the West Somerset Railway! Cheers Syd.

I have been wondering... how long it's been since I commented on here.
I've been wondering where everyone has been hiding? How about a few comments? Good to know you're still around.
I've been hiding in the Queen's Medical Centre Hospital, Nottingham, Terry. Done three stints/stays in there from the 29th December. The last time I stayed in hospital was at Tidworth Military Hospital, 1976. How's things going at your end mate?
Hi Geordie,
Sorry to hear your news but hope you're fighting fit again now. Bearing in mind we're all grumpy old buggers these days. I'm doing reasonably well - I've been referred back to my doctor's now for everything from cardiac problems via just about everything you can think of. The only one I'm still seeing a consultant for is prostate cancer which is being monitored only and is one of the slowest growing types. I was told I'll die with it but not of it so I'll settle for that. I was on injections but put a few pounds on which are now disappearing. I'll have to go back on them some time when my PSA gets a bit higher. So it's still nice to see a post from you - are you still touring when you get the chance?

Great to see you are all still going strong, especially my old mate Terry Carey. We go back a few years!
I am fighting off the Coronavirus by smoking Condor in my pipe. I've been doing that for 70 years and
it's worked for everything.
Good news that you are OK now, Geordie, keep up the fight.
By the way, Terry, are you still doing your 'song and dance' act around the clubs?

Hi John,
Nice to see your name again but I might have to report you to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds if you keep on stuffing our feathered friends into your pipe. You must have what they used to call a cadgers bowl - big enough to hold about two ounces of dark shag although I'm uncertain whether or not you could get a whole condor in one. They're fairly big things aren't they? The birds I mean - not the cadgers bowl!
As to any song and dance forays these days they are long in the past. I've had no end of trouble with my throat after a visit to E.N.T. some while back and I keep being told that what happened would not, could not, have affected it as I am claiming and that there is nothing wrong with it. So why is my throat always sore? Along the same gloomy path my ears have gone so bad that even with two up-to-date hearing aids it's hard for me to appreciate anything I hear musically. All I have to listen back to of mine is a demo disc I made when we used to go to FR reunions. I had a sore throat even then! Oh and some recordings made when my elder son was sixty but they were done on mobile phones so not much good for quality. Ah well, as I often say - you can't win 'em all.
Otherwise as I said to Geordie I'm doing pretty well okay at present.
This lockdown is a nuisance but we have some relatives who live close and they are pitching in for us. Just looked into our car for my favourite baseball cap and it is beginning to smell foisty so I've opened all the windows a crack. Going to give it a run over the weekend. I mean the car of course - not my baseball cap before anyone has a pop at me!
I've just installed Skype on my lap top so if anyone wants a face to face it's easy enough to install and connects in a second or two.
So for the moment all best wishes to everyone - keep in touch please!

In fact, I subsequently heard that it was originally developed as a replacement for 'Stockholm Tar', but was discontinued on humanitarian grounds, after complaints by Charles Darwin, Florence Nightingale, Chris Packham's great-great-grandad and other notable naturalists, around the turn of the 19th Century. Never used it as such, but I'm told its a good substitute for a lamp wick on a dark night in a force eight. Cheers, Syd.
Have any of you got Skype on your computers? I downloaded it last week to keep in touch better with my family. We have an eight month old great grandson so missing seeing him growing up. He's baffled about it but does seem to know who we are. It's a lot better than phones and texts.
I tried a pipe when I was newly married. Just got it burned in and learned how much baccy to use when I fancied sitting outside in the sunshine 'cos I didn't like smoking it too much in the house. Couldn't find it anywhere so asked her Ladyship if she had seen it. Turned out she'd been painting and stirred the paint with it. You'll understand why I never bothered with it or any other pipe after that.
Hello T. C. good to see you Syd, Scouse, Geordie (early release) Uncle Tom and all. I myself have all sorts of problems health wise but having my daughter who is a paramedic living nearby has helped. now she is restricted to doing our shopping. adios to all, stay well
Hi John,
Good to see you too so I am presuming that you're a bit better at present and I'm glad about that. How's Gwynedd doing these days- if the spelling is wrong I apologise. It's been good to see a few more of our old mates coming back on even for just one comment. Maybe it's because we're all stuck in at home for the most part so we can catch up a bit. As far as I am concerned the garden is not getting any more attention than normal and the car can stay as it is until the carwashes reopen. It's a good excuse actually. Anyway keep up the good work all of you and let's get back to a bit more chit chat like we used to have. Bye for now and take care!

I've been wondering if that Terry Carey ever got a no expiring bus pass which he started this posting with? So, I jumped on to have a look as a change from Facebook and Lo and Behold there he is still posting. Oh well that's my duty for now.
Aren't these coronavirus strange times??? Can't get a chance to give my grandchildren a hug.

Ah to be sure 'tis one of me old mates popping up his head again. How are you George? Must be still breathing at least so I hope it's freely and not getting pooped at climbing the stairs - presuming you still have stairs where you live or are you all ground floor at yours?
Bus Pass - I've still got one - somewhere in my wallet but haven't used it for years. It also covers our local tram/railway whatever it is known by the name of The Metro and rail travel I believe. Anyway I'm still driving but changed to an automatic 'cos of my dodgy left knee. Old problem cartilage if you're interested. Now heading for a birthday biggie and if you're into Bingo calls it's Top of the Shop - blind 90. Nice to see you but please don't leave it as long before your next visit.
Just to show you how time passes here's a picture of my greatgrandson - Alfie - round about seven months old and he's turning out to be a right scamp.

I said a few weeks back that I was thinking of leaving FR once my subs have run out. I am wondering no more. That's what I shall do. It will be a wrench since I was one of the first few members way, way back. I've made a lot of friends and a few enemies who didn't, for whatever reason, like me but I put the majority of it down to different points of view in most cases.
There were one or two who simply slagged off everything I did and when I asked in a polite manner would they explain why it was so it was usually met with another storm of abuse. In one case mostly drunken foul mouthed ranting and the person even carried it on over on another site until I blanked him. Just an idiot really and he was so abusive on here that he was suspended several times and his posts removed by Admin without any influence by myself. It was not someone from Liverpool - he was another kettle of fish entirely and even worse in his own way.
All of the out and out troublemakers have either moved on or been moved on so the site is at least peaceful which is something for which everyone ought to be thankful. I played my part with getting many of them kicked off and have no hesitation in saying so.
The site has changed beyond all measure and has little to recommend it apart from some people I feel close to. There are many who seem to still be members but who only stir themselves occasionally - their privilege. I am a member on two more sites which are far better and more like this one used to be and they are free.
I will miss some people as you might expect but one or two will be missed like the proverbial hole in the head. How many threads are running regularly? Half a dozen or so but one drives me to distraction - I can't read most of the posts on it because they are so banal, smug and self satisfied and hardly what they are claimed to be.
My subs run out in October so you'll have to put up with me until then. I am not going to do a trick like one very smug person who was in and out like a fiddlers elbow and expected a hero's welcome every time he resurfaced - I for one just used to 'Pass' - there's a hint for you. I will not be a member after the date I finish and have already deleted my automatic payment to keep my membership going.
I have worked very hard in the past to keep this site going as there have been many fallow periods. If anyone cares to research just check back how many threads I started over the years and how many subjects I raised. I doubt if there has been anyone anywhere near my total and most were well supported until there was little else to say on the topics.
Maybe I'll be missed, maybe not. I may even tell you who is the person who drives me to distraction. Then again I may not.
