Hello, My name is Elle and I'm grandaughter to Barry Ball. I'm currently doing an assignment for uni where I have to ghostwrite a piece of work and I'm lucky enough that my grandad has shared with me about some of the time he spent on Christmas island in 1957. But he can't remember many details. He remembers playing "jab a crab" and being bitten by an insect. He remembers being there for one bomb which I'm presuming was Grapple X as I can't find any other info from around the time he was there. it was around 8-9 months and he was back home for his 21st birthday (dec 21st '57).He said he was taken out on an ONS flight as Freight. and that it was so hot he asked to change into his KD's as soon as he got to Hawaii. He remembers someone sliding down a coconut palm and scraping all of his chest and thighs. He remembers Jock, Paddy and Olly. And Paddy being drunk as they marched to a plantation for when the bomb went off. He also remembers someone swimming out over the reef and getting trapped in the coral and sadly dying, and being eaten by sharks. I was just hoping to find some more details. Part of ghostwriting is that I can make details up, but I don't want to. I want to know what it was like for the men who were there. I want to do my grandad justice for all that he has been through since because of what happened with the nuclear testing. He was "hook a duck" 22nd but I'm not sure if that was squadron or what. He was part of search and rescue in St Mawgan when he came home for a year before coming out of the RAF.
